Still on teachers

(This is a recycled post)

Today, I am with Lee Jia Tong enjoying the fresh aroma of bread wafting from the oven. Yes, it's another heartwarming story in "Page 21" – The Baker.

Lee loves bread, all kinds of bread. He wrote,

"I have always love to eat bread. Near Qing Hua University, there are many bakery shops. I have visited all of them. I know every shop that sell nice bread."

One day, Lee started receiving freshly baked bread delivered to his doorstep. All kinds of bread. It was delivered to his apartment by a young man. One day, he was driving back to his apartment. He saw a young man leaving. So, Lee followed this young man to a bakery shop.

It was 5:00 pm, just the right time when the French bread was taken fresh from the ovens. The fresh aroma of bread wafting from the oven opens a fresh window into Lee's world. The story begins …

The owner or the chef was once Lee's student in the primary school. The student did not continue his secondary education due to lack of financial means. The student related that at the time when he was in despair, Lee wrote a letter to him that changed his life. Lee encouraged him to excel in one area. He remembered then Lee brought him to a restaurant to dine. Just before they left, Lee bought some bread for him. He remembered how nice were those bread. He decided that he would be the best of the bakers!

He made it!

The story closes with this question from the student -

Mr Lee, you have many students who are PHD holders. I have not even passed my secondary school. Do you consider me as your student?"

Lee ends with these heartwarming words -

I have not actually taught him anything. I have only taught him two things – Walk tall, and excel in a skill. I have never thought that these two things work wonders in his life.

Yes, there are many little kindness that we pass on that can make wonders in others' life unknowingly. Today, I remember my English teacher when I was in Form 4. I have earlier said he was my first mentor and the mentor who taught me to use my heart to see things. Without him, I would have missed many of the wonders and the beauty of many people passing through my life and the passion of expressing such beauties in English words …
